HTML, or HyperText Markup Language, is arguably the rock upon which web design work is built. In the beginning was the word indeed, and writing a text in the English language is the first step towards web design creation. The text is written in between tags that separate it from HTML code. This text is saved as a HTML file and viewed through a browser, which reads it and translates it into a visual form. The text basically and literally tells the browser what to do and how to do it. Different tags have different functions, and while the tags are not visible in the when the page is viewed through a browser, their effects surely are.

CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, is probably the second most important language in web design work, after HTML. CSS is meant to separate document content from document presentation, to enhance accessibility, increase flexibility and lower complexity. Before CSS, almost all of the presentational qualities of HTML documents were included in the HTML markup. With CSS, developers are able to move information such as font colors background styles, element alignments, borders and sizes to separate sheets, resulting in a simpler HTML markup.

PHP is yet another language related to HTML that comes is very handy for web designer jobs. It was originally developed to create dynamic web pages, and to do so, it is ingrained in the HTML source and translated by a web server with PHP processor module. However, PHP is currently focused on server side scripting, a technology in which a request from a user is accomplished by running a script on the web server to produce dynamic web pages. C on the other hand, is an intermediate level language, and one of the most popular web design work languages. Its uses include systems software, application software, device drivers, embedded software, high performance server and client applications, and it may also be applied to hardware design.

Another popular choice for web designer jobs, that is incidentally written in C , is MySQL, a database management system employed by some of the most visited Internet sites, such as Flickr, Nokia.com, YouTube, Wikipedia, Google and Facebook. Some of the features that MySQL offers are a broad subset of ANSI SQL 99, cross platform support, stored procedures, triggers, cursors, updatable views, true varchar support, information schema, SSL support, query caching, sub selects, replication support, full text indexing, embedded database library, partial unicode support, partial acid compliance and hot backup, among others that are useful for web design work.
